Digipak 1st draft

Here is the first draft of my digipak. I am not quite sure on a few things for example, the font colour on the front cover, two of the pictures which are pixelated, and also the back cover as the font does not fit well with the picture. The only part of my digipak I really like at the moment is the side where the CD goes, I like the fact it captures people dancing and having fun. However I may change this to a different image which I took whilst at a concert in December. I will be having six sides to my finished digipak also. I plan to make all these alterations in the upcoming weeks as I will be back at school.

Structure of music video

I feel I have been struggling to edit and shoot my music video due to the fact I have no clear structure in my head or on paper. I have created a couple of storyboards and spoke about the changes to my music video but I felt it would be beneficial if I actually stated the shots I wish to use and the order of my music. Also I have not really spoke about the mise-en-scene of my music video, so hopefully this will make it clear to those looking through my coursework and myself before I start to film some more footage next week.

Magazine advert completed

This is my magazine advert. It is very similar to the one that I drew up in the planning stages of creating it. Planning before hand helped me as I already had a certain picture in my head that I wanted to created meaning I could just get on with it quickly and efficiently. I chose the colour scheme of purple and white as I felt it worked well together, with both the image and text being able to work together and both be as eye catching as the other. I felt this was important as the text such as reviews are just important as a striking image. I stuck with the font that I spoke about briefly in planning and to accompany it I used Impact and (need to put the fonts name here). These fonts work well together.

Using my draft magazine advert I was able to make changes to make sure my finished magazine advert look professional and visually pleasing. As I mentioned in the post I wanted to change the date from the '30th November 2013' to '30.11.13'. I have done this and feel that it does infact look better having the date in the numerical version as it flows well with the structure of the advert, meaning that also aspects with recieve the same amount of attention they all need. I also tried to make the line splitting up the image and text less visable, in comparison to the draft it is infact less visble however you can still see it a little bit. I did try and make it less visable but this the changed the colour of the advert to a darker purple which I did not like. Another change that I made to my finished advert is I moved the reviews dow a little as I felt that there was too much of a gap between the date of release and also the words 'Available on digital download'. This movement of the reviews has seemed to close the gap, making the advert flow visually more.

Overall I am pleased with my music advert, and hope to achieve the same look with my digipak so that the potential audience are able to relate the digiapk, the advert and the music video together.

Alterations along the way

Magazine advert 1st Draft

This is the draft of my magazine advert for my music video. There are some postives and some weakness to this draft. I like the font of 'Wilkinson' and 'Afterglow' and also feel that the reviews are appropriate and are also in the correct place, meaning that they stand out to the public and possibly influence their choice of watching to music video. I also like the colour scheme of the purple colour. I feel its more effective that having a plan black  background or no background at all as the colour is eye catching and would stand out when placed on billboards and magazines. I also feel that the choice of photo is effective. Having a close up of my models face allows the public to see the emotion and possiby empathize with her. Also by my model looking straight at the camera it makes the audience feel that she is making eye contact with them, potentially making the advert personalised to them, making them more incline to take notice of the advert and go off and watch the music video.

One thing that I am not to keen on is the date of when it was released. I feel that maybe it would look better if the date read '30.11.13'. I also feel that the line that seperates the photo from the text needs to faded a little bit so it looks less visable, giving a smooth finish to my music video. These are two possible changes that I may make to my advert in upcoming drafts/finished verision.

Magazine advert planning

As I am behind on my filming I am going to start my magazine advert. However I need to plan it first before I begin to start it. Here are my ideas for my advert...

Health and safey evidence for filming in the studio with the lights on the 4/12/13

Here is a risk assessment sheet for the filming with the lights in the studio. One risk appeared when I had to move the lights from the classroom down to the studio. This risk was solved as three of us carried the two lights and equipment down meaning that we were not overloaded with equipment that we could possibly drop and injure ourselves with. Moreover, the lights also became extremely hot after filmed, however as we were told previously that the lights were going to be hot we knew not to touch them and therefore did not get burn or injure ourselves. The way to minimise this risk was waiting till it was completely cool and then carrying it back up to the class room.

Storyboards

Here are three storyboards which illsutrate my intentions for my music video. My narrative revolves around a young womens night out. The first shot will be of my model (Hannah) looking rough with her make up smeared all round her face and with her hair messy. I will then fade this shot out so it looks like 'flashbacks' of her night out. I have changed the order of my of the narrative on my storyboard, from the second shot being clips of her starting to get ready and drinking. I then plan to use clips of flashing lights to illustrate the party theme of the narrative to break up each part of the story. I will also use mid shots of Hannah looking into the camera (like the first shot) to break up the clips to. As the song goes on Hannah will slowly loose the 'rough' look and by the end will look like shes is just about to go out.

Diary entry 4/12/13

Diary entry 4/12/13 (and photo of location)

Yesterday I filmed parts of my music video. I filmed in one of the drama rooms where the walls are all black, I then set up the red lights and place a box in front of them. This meant that the lights are included in my music video giving a mysterious and unknown feel, which was made even more apparent with the black walls. I have started to edit my music video but I need to film much more footage. This includes my actor drinking alcohol whilst getting ready which makes her drunk and unstable. I will be using point of view shots to portray this drunk feeling to the audience. My target audience which is 17-26 year olds will be able to relate to this feeling as this generation are known for partying and drinking way to much.

Here is a picture of the setting...

I am very behind in filming and have only filmed a little bit. I plan to film when I go to Calvin Harris with my friend who is also my artist in my music video. Im going to film on my camera phone, even though this wont be the best quality, I think this will be effective as it will give the audience the feel of the crowd and atmosphere. Also Calvin Harris is quite similar to the genre of drum and base so it will capture shots that would be seen in a drum and base concert.

Here is a picture of a type of shot that I want to achieve whilst at Calvin Harris. I took this shot at Wireless 2013 in July when seeing Calvin Harris...

Health and safety evidence from filming outside on the 22/11/13

Here is a risk assessment sheet which I have completed for when I filmed outside yesterday. The main risks where moving the lights and also the lights/wires getting wet. Luckily the weather was great and the floor was not wet meaning it was safe to film, however if it did rain I would not of filmed as that would be a health and safety risk and also cause potential damage to the equipment.

Diary Entry/pitch - 28/10/13

This prezi is a production log and also a pitch for my new ideas. Alongside this I am going to research my new artist and make a presentation on them just so that I have something that is of complete relevance to my new ideas. I will also research the genre of the song which is Drum and Base, so that I and also others can see the elements of drum and base in a bit more detail.

Diary entry 14/10/13

I am currently putting together a short video to show the raw footage that I have collected. As ive only got the footage I have filmed in Trafalga I have left a space to place my green screen and also other footage that I plan to film in the next few weeks. I am going to book a green screen session for next week. I will then be able to to start editing when we come back after the half term. Not only this I am going to take a camera and tripod home so that I can film over the half term to. The more footage the have the better, as it will allow me to have a varied amount of shots.

I am looking forward to filming on green screen as it will be a new skill that I can learn and use in future projects. I plan to mostly use green screen to film shots where my friends are singing the lyrics to the song. There will be extreme close ups on their lips with bright red or pink lipstick on singing the main lyrics of the song 'I dont care, I love it'. This will make a statement and will drive the main message of the song to the audience.

Audience feedback and an insight of what I have done so far

Heres an example of my questionnaire that has been filled out by a person from my target audience.

They seem to agree that I should use green screen in my music video which I plan to do in the next few weeks. As well as this they feel props and costume are of great importance to. I have got this covered as I am going to make my artists change their outfits everytime I film and I also have interseting props such as a penny board and sparklers.

This is the original powerpoint that I used when presenting.

Photographs of locations

On saturday the 29th of September I went to Trafalga Square with my friends to film some of my music video. Here are a few pictures that I captured when filming to demonstrate the places that I have filmed at.

Diary entry 11/9/13

Recently I havent been doing as much work as I should be doing, I still have a lot to do and this includes filiming my actual music video. I am currently in the middle of completeing my final storyboards, which will give me an idea of what type of shots and camera movements I wish to have in my music video. I plan to film again either this weekend or next weekend as both my friends are free to do so. I may go up to London to film some scenes, however I am not to sure on this idea yet as London is usually very busy and my friends may feel embarrassed performing. Not only this, I need to learn to use After Effects so that I can edit in some special effects to my music video. I feel that After Effects will help convey the 'festival/party' theme of my music video, for example I could add in high key lighting, and also flashing lights to act as strobes.

Analysis of an artists magazine advert

Editing Software

Throughout my project I will be using multiple software's to make sure that I create and maintain a professional and successful music video. Software's that I will be regularly using include Adobe Photoshop and also Premiere. I may also have to use a software called Adobe After Effects which will allow me to add in effects to my shots, if they are needed. I have never used this software before so I will have to get to grips with it first.

I will be using Adobe Photoshop to edit the images for my digipak and also for my magazine advert. Photoshop has a variety of tools that will help me to make my images look professional, for example, one tool that I will use regularly is the tool that lets me remove the background (if needed) from the image. I will also be able to use visual effects, which will make my images optically enjoyable and interesting for the audience. Using a range of effects such as filters, will allow the audience to see the skill that I have in Photoshop, which I have gradually gained over years of using it. Not only this, I can use Photoshop to create my digipak and my magazine advert, therefore making this software a very useful and important part of my project.

Next, I will be using Adobe Premiere throughout the majority of my project to edit and piece together my music video, shot by shot. As I have only just recently learnt how to use Premiere I have not perfected the skill of using it yet. I have however, learnt the basics due to the fact I have used it to create mini videos and presentations. I will first start to use this software by placing all my clips onto a timeline and removing their audio. I will then import my song onto the timeline and will start arranging and piecing together the clips, so that my music video flows together nicely, creating and easy and enjoyable watch for my audience.

Lastly, I could potentially use Adobe After Effects to add special effects into my music video. As I wish to have a summery theme throughout my music video, I could use this software to make my clips have high key lighting if I feel the natural lighting is not enough. As I have never used this software before it will be hard to grasp at first, however it will be great to learn to use a new software, as it will broaden my skills. I feel that this could be very useful to my music video as the weather in England is very rarely sunny and bright, and we are heading into Autumn  which means the weather is only going to get worse, so After Effects could help me create the feeling of summer I wish to include in my music video.

Analysis of previous students A2 work

Analysis of previous students a2 work from emmacalder123

Analysing other students work has helped me gain a better understanding of what I want to achieve when creating my own music video. I have realised that attention to detail is key, whether that be when choosing the location or costume, or even to the camera placement.

Diary entry 20/8/13

Yesterday I filmed scenes for my music video, but before this I went to Hobby Craft and brought some props for my friends to wear, items included, glitter, bubbles and also face paint. Not only this I brought some 'Alice bands' and some flowers to create a flower head band for the girls to wear in the music video. All these items can be found in videos that portray a summery, festival feeling. This illustrates the genre of pop as a whole. Flower headbands are quite 'in your face' and loud just like the genre of pop can be. Also Pop is associated with the summer due to its upbeat, happy vibe which summer brings to people.

Here is images of the flower head band that I created:

Videos that I personally admire (4)

I love this music video because of its high key lighting. It creates a really summery and festival feeling which I really want to create in my music video. Not only this, I have taken on board the props that they have use in this music video, such as flowery headbands, bubbles and also the brightly coloured sunglasses. I am going to go and buy these objects as I feel that these will help create the summery theme that I really want to get across on my music video.

Research into the relavent music genre

Icona Pop are classed as multiple genres. This includes Electro House, House, Electro Pop and also Indie Pop. I chose to research Electro House as I wanted to gather a better understanding of what the genre actually was, and what the main characteristic are. Now I have done this research, I have a better understanding of the genre and also can see the characteristics of the genre in Icona Pop's song 'I love it'.

Diary Entry 4/8/13

I feel that filming when the sun is shining will fit the genre of  my music video well. This is because the genre pop and other sub genres portray happiness and a care free attitude, which the summer brings to people. Particularly as summer is known for celebrating freedom, like after exams at school and uni and also is when people who work are able to take time off, which can influence a care free attitude due to their lack of stress.

Analysis of exsisting digipaks

Diary Entry 2/8/13

I have completed a presentation for 'Music Video Theory' however I feel I will need to add to this as it doesn't seem very detailed and lacks explanations. However I plan in the next couple of days to complete 'Analysis of existing digipaks' and 'Analysis of music videos'. Both of these come under the research part of my coursework, I have mainly been concentrating on these as I need to get the whole of the research part done by the start of September (for when I go back to school). I will try and complete some of my planning tasks though when I have got some spare time.

Diary entry 23/7/13

I have added posts of music videos that I personally admire to my blog and spoke about why and what ideas I am going to take from them today. I have also created a collage of multiple images of music related things to set as the background as my blog but for some reason I cant put it up at the moment, so hopefully I can do that in the next few days. Tonight I am also going to storyboard my ideas so that I can take a camera home with me to film my music video over the summer. I need to make sure I film over the summer as I need to portray a summery theme in my music video. Hopefully the weather stays nice for me to be able to do so.

Music videos I personally admire (3)

Music videos that I personally admire (2)

This is another music video that I really like. I would probably say that this is one of my favourites due to the narrative; it tells the story of a young man who lost his leg in a bike crash and his journey on getting back to his old self and being able to ride again. I really like the long shots that set the scene of the narrative and also the fact that they capture the man in his personal surroundings. I also like the point of view shots that have been used an example of this is the camera being strapped to the mans bmx bike at the end which gives us as the audience a sense of his surroundings and makes us feel included in the journey. Another great shot can be found right at the start of the video when the man gets hit by the car and the bike falls on the floor. The camera is also placed on the floor at a canted angle giving the audience a sense of distortion.  I also like the fact the camera is slightly shaky, like it has been filmed on say a mobile phone as it gives a sense of reality and illustrates that life is not all glamorous at times.  Not only do I feel the camera shots/angles are powerful, I also really like the diegetic sound of the bikes at the start which gives the audience a clue about the narrative of the music video i.e. that it is about bmx riders and also creates a sense of realism. Even though I am not doing a narrative based music video, I feel that I can gain a lot of ideas from this video for example the shots and camera angles.

Mood board

Above is my mood board. I feel that all these images represent and reflect the genre of dance/pop music through their bright and 'in your face' colours. I have included images on objects that I wish to include in my actual music video, for example the clothes i.e the converse/vans, the sunglasses, and the bright coloured nails. I also want to make my actors looks like they are having fun and our happy in my music video (hence the picture that says 'smile'). This is important as dance/pop music is very upbeat and positive and makes people feel like they are having a great time. I have also included various pictures of glitter and also ones on people blowing glitter from their hands in the direction of the camera. I would love to include shots like this in my music video as it will create a feeling fun and messiness would all are connotations of a care free attitude. As you can see all my pictures in my mood board are of bright colour and I want this to be the same in my music video, so that a positive feeling can be clearly illustrated to my target audience.

History of music videos

Diary Entry 22/7/13

I am aiming to complete 'History of a music video' and also complete my mood board today. I feel I need to vary the way I also present my production diaries too, for example doing them on a prezi, power point or even a short video to make my blog look more interesting. I will also be personalising my blog today by adding pictures of music related objects to portray that my blog is all about music videos.

Videos that I personally admire (1)

Swedish House Mafia - Don't You worry Child

This is most definitely one of my favourite videos. I love the party/festival atmosphere that it creates via the shots of the crowds jumping and dancing around to the song. I also love the ariel shots that are captured by the helicopter as it gives the audience a feel of the location. I also admire this video as it shows the artists (Swedish House Mafia) enjoying their last gig at a festival before they go their separate ways. It shows the group having an amazing time and having a laugh with each other. These shots, especially the crowd shots make me wish I was at a festival listening to music and dancing with all my friends. It gives you that feel good feeling that a video should give you. From this video I am going to take the mid shots and close ups of the festival go-ers dancing and singing the lyrics as I feel this makes it personalised to the audience as it makes them feel really involved in the atmosphere.

Research into my artist

Diary Entry 8/7/13

I have chosen to change my song for my music video. I have chosen this as I feel that my initial ideas for the Calvin Harris song where not feasible for someone on my kind of budget. I have now chosen to do the song by Icona Pop - I love it. I have chosen this song as I feel it is still of a similar genre i.e pop and dance, (my favourite genre) which will allow me to enjoy making my music video. Here is the link to my chosen song...
